5 Important Scaffolding Safety Tips

The use of scaffolding is absolutely essential to the functioning of the construction industry. It’s hard to imagine just about any significant construction project that does not make use of some sort of scaffold structure to provide the necessary access for workers to do their jobs.

However, for all the advantages it offers, scaffolding also comes with a fair amount of risk, especially if proper protocols aren’t followed. The structure needs to be secure, which requires ground level preparation before it is set up and the assembly needs to be secure. The workers need to follow the right procedures and take proper precautions not to lose footing while working many metres above ground.

While this is not an exhaustive list, here are some important safety tips to keep in mind when using scaffolding:

1. Prepare the surface area

Take the necessary time to prepare the ground where the scaffolding will be erected. Level it, if necessary, and make sure the earth is packed properly to prevent the structure from sagging or collapsing during construction.

2. Set it up safely

It’s important to install the base jacks first. This will ensure that you don’t need to lift the entire scaffold at a later point to try and slide them in. Follow this by installing both the top cross braces on one frame, then move the second frame into position so that you can attach the cross braces to the bottom of this. When the frame is put together, move it into place and install the planks.

3. Don’t skimp on planking

Wherever possible, plank the whole bay. This means covering the whole width of the scaffold, or as much of the width as possible, with planks. This will result in a larger work area, making it easier for your team. It also reduces the risk of falling.

4. Always, always use a guardrail

Too often, certain contractors ignore handrails, or only install the minimum amount where they think it is most necessary in order to save time and effort. Do not fall into this trap. Handrails are essential for the safety of your team, as they will stop workers from accidentally stepping off the platform.

5. Make sure you invest in quality scaffolding

Not all scaffolding is of the same quality. Buy top quality products to ensure that the parts last, and that everything fits together as they should.
